Thomas Mapfumo is heading to the United Kingdom for two historic shows tomorrow night and the day after.
The self-exiled Zimbabwean artist has taken matters into his own hands to overcome organisational hurdles that saw him failing to perform in the United Kingdom for almost three years.
Mapfumo said: “After several years of dealing with various promoters some of whom have let us down, I have decided that the only way we can avoid disappointing our fans is to take care of the whole organisation of these gigs.”
The chimurenga exponent will perform at the Oasis Banqueting Barking, London tonight and the Starlite, Leicester, tomorrow.
His two daughters in London, together with Taurai Cheteni, a close associate based in Leeds are co-ordinating the gigs.
The legend, told ZimEye from his home in Oregon, US, that he was taking with him a team of eight band members who will join a bassist based in London.
He said apart from thumbing his all-time classics, Mapfumo would be playing his new album titled Danger Zone, together with bits from the recent Exile.
His rapper son Tapfumanei, popularly known by his stage name “Tai”, is expected to make his UK debut live on stage as a curtain raiser for his father.
