A 32-year-old Chitungwiza man was on Monday slapped with an effective 16-year jail term for raping his nine-year-old daughter on two separate occasions early this year.

The man appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu charged under Section 65 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 for rape.

Public prosecutor Concelia Maheya told the court that on January 27 this year, the man was left home with the minor as his wife went to look for part-time jobs in the high-density suburb.

After making sure no one was observing his movements, the man locked his daughter inside their bedroom and raped her.

He then threatened her with unspecified action if she divulged the abuse.

On March 11, the man again took advantage of his wife’s absence and raped the minor after chasing away other children she was playing with.

However, the juvenile later reported the matter to her mother, leading to the man’s arrest.

A medical report produced in court confirmed the girl had been sexually abused.

The man was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison but four years were later suspended on condition of good behaviour.
