A man who allegedly murdered a 70-year-old Pumula resident and buried the body in a shallow grave stunned the court yesterday after he claimed that he killed the man because he had failed to pay $50 for sodomising him.

This came to light during the confirmation of the suspect Daniel Sinkala’s warned and cautioned statement, which is contained in the Criminal Record Book by Bulawayo magistrate Shepherd Mjanja.

According to the statement, Sinkala admitted he was the one who killed William Longwe by striking him with a pick head twice in the head over a $50 debt. “I do admit to the charge of killing William Longwe,” read the statement by Sinkala.

“On Friday the 13th of July, I got to William Longwe’s house at 10 O’clock in the morning and found him still cooking and we ate and further proceeded to sleep in his bed.

“He used to make me his wife by sodomising me. Each time whenever he was done he would pay me $50.

“On the 13th of July he had sex with me twice, but did not give me my money.

“He only informed me after he was through that he did not have money. I then got up and went to sit in the kitchen. He followed me to the kitchen and sat on a stool. I then asked him whether he really meant that he did not have my money and he said he did not have it.

“At 6 O’clock I got up and proceeded to the toilet where I picked a pick head and then returned to the kitchen where I then struck him twice on the head with it and he fell.”

Sinkala said he covered Longwe’s body with a plastic bag so that blood could not drip to the floor and left him lying there.

He was remanded in custody to August 7 and advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
