PLUMTREE — Zanu PF is yet to make a position on the draft constitution, which will go to a referendum some time in September, a politburo member said yesterday.

Addressing about 2 500 villagers at the installation of Thursus Ncube as Chief Madlambudzi yesterday, Local Government, Rural and Urban Development minister Ignatius Chombo said they would campaign for a “No” vote if the draft does not meet their expectations.

The draft was completed on Wednesday and will be discussed at a Second All-Stakeholders’ Conference before the referendum.

“You will soon be shown the draft of the new constitution,” he said.

“The leaders I have shown you here will come to you and tell you whether we vote Yes or No.

“Once we are done with the new constitution we will be going for elections and that is where there is a lot of work.”

Speaking at the same event, Zanu PF chairman Simon Khaya Moyo said the draft would be scrutinised before a decision to support it or not it is made. Meanwhile, National Healing co-minister Moses Mzila-Ndlovu accused Chombo of immaturity after he used the installation ceremony to campaign for Zanu PF.

“I find it immature for a government minister and highly irresponsible for him to use what is supposed to be a non-partisan platform to further the agenda of one party,” he said.

“There is nothing humorous about what he said, it is offensive. It also serves to confirm our argument all along that Zanu PF are sabotaging the GPA (Global Political Agreement), you cannot smuggle your party position into a non-partisan platform.”
