Local golfers were given a timely boost yesterday following the addition of a new tournament on the Golden Pilsener Zambezi Tour circuit called the Tour Championship.

The 36-hole Tour Championship, which has a prize money of $10 000, will be played at the Country Club in Harare from July 27-28.

“It is pleasing to report that the local professional golf tour resumes action in less than 10 days. A new event on the calendar has been incorporated called the Tour Championship,” said Tendayi Gwatiringa, the Zambezi Tour’s marketing and communications director in a statement yesterday.

“This is a new event on the Zambezi Tour calendar, and in future will be held annually towards the end of the season. The Tour has this year brought the event forward and it will be a good warm up before the second major of the year, the Lowveld pro-am scheduled for the end of August 2012. Entries for the event close this Friday,” he said.

The Tour Championship will be the fifth tournament on the Golden Pilsner Zambezi Tour after the Mashwede Diesel Open, the Golden Pilsner Zimbabwe Open, the Marange Resources Open and the Open Classic. Bulawayo Golf Club professional Brian Gondo, the winner of the last tourney on the circuit, the Open Championship currently leads the tour’s money list having earned $7 300 so far.

Greg Bentley is in second place with $6 825 from four tournaments while Micky Hogh, who has played one less tournament, is in third with $5 681.25.
