Nine MDC-T activists from the Gomoza area in Lupane were brought to court last week over a June 2008 violence case involving Zanu PF supporters.

The suspects are alleged to have raided Zanu PF supporters’ homes and assaulted eight party activists in the run-up to the June 2008 presidential run-off poll.

They include Robert Tshuma (60), who was last week convicted of a similar charge and sentenced to 350 hours of community service, and Victor Nyoni (40), who was acquitted in the same case.

The other seven are Norman Sibanda (50), Abraham Sibanda (53), Orchard Ndlovu (44), Mane Patrick Ncube (47), Melusi Ncube (40), Dokotela Sibanda (58) and Thulani Sibanda (34).

They were not asked to plead to the violence charges when they appeared before Lupane magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba last Thursday. The court remanded them out of custody to August 22 for the setting-up of a trial date.

It is the State case that between June 22 and 23 in 2008, the nine went to Holomoka village in Gomoza where they allegedly attacked Zanu PF activists, accusing them of carrying out campaigns in an MDC-T stronghold.

The suspects allegedly assaulted eight Zanu PF supporters using stones, knobkerries, axes, iron rods and logs.

A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of the MDC-T activists.
