Matabeleland South provincial magistrate Douglas Zvenyika has died.

He succumbed to injuries sustained when he lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road after hitting a goat which had strayed into the highway.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Loveness Mangena said Zvenyika died at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) on Saturday due to injuries sustained in a car accident the same day.

“On the day in question the Matabeleland South provincial magistrate Douglas Zvenyika of house number 13, 7th Avenue, Gwanda, was driving his Madza B2200 along the Gwanda–Beitbridge Highway. When he reached the 135km peg, he hit a goat which had strayed into the road,” Mangena said.

“The car rolled several times before hitting an electrical pole and landed on its wheels. Zvenyika sustained serious head and facial injuries. Police attended the scene and he was taken to Gwanda District Hospital and was in turn referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he died on admission.”

Mangena appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving and be on the lookout for livestock as the province was a ranching area.

The accident came barely two weeks after four people died under similar circumstances.

Zvenyika’s wife, Mawona Dzinotyiwei-Zvenyika, said her husband would be buried in Rusape tomorrow.

Zvenyika’s death comes hardly a week after the murder of Chegutu magistrate Fabian Feshete.

Meanwhile, Magistrates’ Association of Zimbabwe secretary-general Munamato Mutevedzi described the deaths as a major blow to the profession.

“Both of them died in very tragic circumstances that left the entire magistracy shocked to the core and grief-stricken to the extreme. The loss of these two very senior magistrates and administrators will leave a void which will be hard to fill,” Mutevedzi said.
