Amakhosi Cultural Centre is set to partner with the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in organising cultural tours in and around the city.

According to the council’s general purposes committee report, the arts organisation approached council last month seeking to have city authorities join hands with them in carrying out the Emadwaleni and Inner City Tours.

“The Emadwaleni Tour starts at Amakhosi Cultural Centre going through places such as Khami Ruins, Njelele Shrine, Rhodes’ Grave, Ntunjambila past King Mzilikazi’s grave, Old Bulawayo and finally back at the cultural centre for a traditional dinner culminating with a traditional performance,” wrote Amakhosi to BCC.

“The second is the Inner City Tour, which focuses on places of interest found within the city such as the National Art Gallery, Mzilikazi Art Centre, the Railway Museum and other places, which can be added on as we expand the initiative.”

The committee resolved that management engage Amakhosi “on a possible joint venture on this project and then report to council in due course” after Amakhosi had said they would not be able to go it alone.

“Currently Amakhosi Cultural Centre cannot fund this project alone and we, therefore seek other partners to support us with issues related to permits,” wrote the arts group.

“It is our hope that council will include Amakhosi in its new partnerships such as the city twinning arrangements.”

According to the report, town clerk Middleton Nyoni said the concept “had a good revenue potential”. He said in other countries, the concept was “big business where relevant authorities conducted tours for insights into specific areas of interest within and outside cities.

“In this instance, Amakhosi had probably seen this venture in operation elsewhere and had realised the massive potential.” Nyoni added: “They had also realised that they could not be able to go it alone, hence the suggestion for council support and involvement at the outset.”

Committee members were unanimous that the proposal would “help put Bulawayo on the world map”.
