DARWENDALE — Two MDC-T youths were reportedly arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting a Zanu PF activist whom they accused of starting a veld fire in a bushy area where MDC-T secretary-general, Tendai Biti, was addressing a campaign rally.
MDC-T Mashonaland West organising secretary Wilson Makanyaire yesterday confirmed the arrest of the two for assaulting a suspected Zanu PF activist over the bush fire.
“Indeed, we had two of our guys, Jerico Ngona and Alvin Kundishaya, arrested by police in Darwendale on Saturday for assaulting a Zanu PF youth who allegedly started a fire near the venue of our rally which was being addressed by MDC-T secretary-general Tendai Biti,” said Makanyaire.
Makanyaire said the pair was being held at Darwendale Police Station.
However, efforts to get police comment were fruitless as Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara was unreachable on his phone.
MDC-T supporters accused their Zanu PF counterparts of starting the veld fire in a bid to disrupt Biti’s rally.
Earlier on, soldiers from the nearby Inkomo Barracks had sealed off Darwendale Primary School grounds where the MDC-T initially wanted to hold its rally.
Makanyaire said the rally only proceeded following the intervention of co-Home Affairs minister Theresa Makone, who engaged Defence minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Meanwhile, Biti said he had come to Darwendale despite receiving information of the disruption of the rally by soldiers, as an act of defiance.
“I came here to make a statement against dictatorship. I pray for soft vengeance against Zanu PF and Mugabe,” said Biti at the rally.
