Three men claiming to be police officers on Tuesday allegedly raided MDC Council of Elders chairman Fletcher Dulini Ncube’s Hillside home and stole a mobile phone.

Ncube, the former Lobengula-Magwegwe MP who was falsely accused of killing war veterans’ leader Cain Nkala and detained for several months in 2002, said he was puzzled by the raid.

Yesterday he told NewsDay that the suspects raided his house soon after he had left for his plot in Warringham on the outskirts of the city.

Ncube said the suspects who arrived in a car found the maid alone in the house and told her they were police officers.

“They forced the maid to open the gate and went straight to the house where they concentrated on my bedroom,” he said.

“Every box in there was opened, but important documents such as title deeds and passports were left scattered on the floor.

“If the people responsible were genuine thieves they would have taken valuable items, but they only took a mobile phone. To me that’s puzzling.”

Two men reportedly ransacked the house while the third suspect kept guard at the gate.

Police in Bulawayo said they could not comment as provincial spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo was away.

MDC national spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said they viewed the incident as “a calculated plot to intimidate and abuse the leader of the party”.

“We believe that this is an act of cowardice by the traditional enemies of a just and fair Zimbabwe,” he said.

“The MDC wishes to reiterate that the leadership of the party is not only unmoved by this (act of) intimidation, but very much prepared to tackle the handlers of these criminals by all democratic instruments at our disposal.”

Ncube is the former treasurer general of the united MDC.
