Knowing that the Christian faith is based on what God said and continues to say through His Word — the Bible — the devil found it more advantageous to deceive and trick believers through the Bible that they believed in.

We cannot overemphasise the importance of knowing Scriptures and interpreting them correctly.

Cults, false prophets and religions — which are agents of the devil — use the Bible as the basis for leading their followers astray. Many people have gone to these gatherings assuming that they are true churches. Whenever the Bible is quoted, check the context for yourself and ascertain that the text is consistent with the entire Bible.

The fall of mankind was a result of Satan coming to Eve purporting to support God’s Word. He misquoted it and twisted it and Eve fell for it.

Let us look at it more closely. After creating man, God gave this instruction in Genesis 2:16: “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat.”

Satan comes in and asks a simple yet tricky question in Genesis 3:1: “And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

The effect of this is that God had given mankind freedom to eat every tree except one and the devil asks a question insinuating that God had not given them freedom to eat of any tree at all.

If you read the story further you will see how the woman was confused. Satan often proffers to you that God wants to limit your liberty and happiness. The devil manifests as an angel of light and portrays God as an inconsiderate and harsh master. He will tell you that it is not that very bad to have sex outside marriage as long as you are in love. Haven’t you ever heard him saying Jesus turned water into wine, so drinking is permissible? He tells you that Paul instructed Timothy to take a bit of wine.

You have to be wary and careful whose mouth is speaking the Words of Scripture. This is the reason I don’t subscribe to the theology of giving demons time to speak telling us how powerful and anointed we are. The devil is the father of lies. Even if he correctly tells me my name, I will not listen because he will be trying to catch me somewhere along the way. This may leave some of you wondering who then to listen to because there are both true and false prophets.

Check what Jesus did in Mark 1:13-24: “And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.” The devil tempted Jesus by quoting Psalm 91:11-12 out of context. Matthew 4:6 says: “And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.”

The protection God assures us is not for showing off and tempting God and Jesus picked it and says in Matthew 4:7: “Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” It is not always that when a Bible is used, the truth is being preached.

You are so susceptible to false doctrine, lies and manipulation. Is there remedy? Yes.

Firstly you have to be born again and be filled with the Holy Spirit who is able to discern and tell you the truth. Jesus says so in John 16:13-14: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” Ask God to fill you up with the Holy Spirit and He will do it.

Luke 11:13 supports this: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Read the Bible for yourself and always have enough and ready verses for the devil’s tricks. Check whose mouth is speaking the Bible. Don’t let the devil speak to you even if it makes sense, you are going somewhere.
