Zimbabwe Davis Cup team stormed into promotional playoffs of the Davis Cup Africa Zone Group III after overcoming Namibia 3-0 in their last round robin match in Tunisia on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe, who had lost their opening match 0-3 to Pool A winners Tunisia before bouncing back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Ghana on Tuesday, now face Pool B winners Benin today.

In another promotional playoff also set for today, Pool A winners Tunisia take on Ivory Coast. The two winning nations will be promoted to Group II for 2013.

Tunisia and Benin, who led their respective pools, maintained their perfect record in the competition with 3-0 wins over Ghana and Algeria respectively, but it was Zimbabwe and Ivory Coast who needed victories to advance, and both teams delivered.

According to reports from Tunisia, Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Lock defeated Tuki Jacobs 6-4, 6-2 to get the ball rolling, allowing Mark Fynn to clinch the vital point with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Jean Erasmus. The rout was completed by Lock and Tendai Tapfuma in the doubles rubber.

Ivory Coast also won both singles matches to help them record a 2-1 win against Kenya and a second place finish in Pool B to set a date with Pool A winners Tunisia.

Aboubacar Sigue overcame Ismael Mzai 6-4, 7-6(4) in the day’s opening rubber, before Terence Nugent put the tie beyond doubt after 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Mohammed Fazal Khan.

Zimbabwe finished third last year to miss out on the promotion to Group II after finishing behind Madagascar and Egypt.
