Prices of some basic commodities remained stagnant in June, a sign that the economy was stable, the latest Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) report has shown.

The monthly basket for a family of six increased marginally by 0,18% to $561,13 in June from $560,14 in May.

“The CCZ is pleased with the fact that no increases were recorded at all for some of the commodities while prices for some actually fell,” said the consumer watchdog this week.

“As the CCZ, we believe this is as it should be in a normal economy.”

Relentless and unwarranted increases in the prices of goods and services remain a great concern to consumers in the absence of any logical explanations by retailers – a situation which has forced many to ask questions about what the real value of the US dollar is locally and the reasons behind such phenomenon.”

According to the CCZ, the food basket for June increased by $1,35 to $148,88 in May, while the food and detergents basket increased to $162,12 in the period under review.

“The rise in the basket was precipitated largely by changes in the price of sugar, which went up 10c from $2,15 to $2,25 currently, cooking oil by 16c from $1,39 to $1,55 and tea leaves by 46c from $1,89 to $2,35.

“Other increases were recorded for rice and tomatoes which went up by 5c. Cabbage and bath soap went up by 9c and 2c respectively,” the report said.

During the period under review, there were price reductions in prices of mealie-meal, fresh milk, onions and washing bars, while prices of margarine, bread, flour, salt, beef and washing powder remained unchanged.

The CCZ said the cost of the basket for transport, rent, water and electricity, health, education, clothing and footwear remained at $399 although transport fares were being hiked during peak periods.
