Three people died on the spot while 11 others were seriously injured after a privately-owned car they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled several times before landing on its side at the 150km peg along the Chivhu-Nyazura Road on Sunday.

Manicaland acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Enock Chishiri said two of the deceased were members of the same family.

Chishiri identified the deceased as Gloria Mandenhema (36), Fungai Mandenhema (27) and Jania Mundanadi (65) all of Harare, adding preliminary police investigations indicated that the vehicle was speeding.

He said the driver, Tichaona Nyamadzawo (68), lost control of the vehicle at a road T-junction near Murambinda business centre, leading to the accident.

“Nyamadzawo failed to negotiate a T-junction and because of that the vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times before landing on its right side. He had 14 passengers on board and when it overturned, three passengers died on the spot and several others sustained injuries,” Chishiri said.

The injured were admitted at Murambinda Hospital. “We would like to urge people to use public transport when traveling and drivers also should follow road regulations,” Chishiri said.
