Children’s Performing Arts Workshop (Chipawo) Harare Junior Theatre Company has been invited to perform at the World Festival of Children’s Performing Arts in Toyama, Japan, to be held from July 31 to August 5 under the theme, “We build our future”.

In an interview with the NewsDay, Deon Picardo, who is Chipawo’s programmes officer said the tour is aimed at promoting mutual cultural exchange and friendship among the different groups across the globe.

“This tour is aimed at promoting mutual cultural exchange and friendship among the different groups across the world with about 10 children from different centres going to the festival,” said Picardo.

According to Picardo, in Japan, the group is expected to perform a play called Sindile, which is a pun of the fairytale Cinderella.

Meanwhile, Chipawo is appealing for donations to enable more children to attend the festival.

“We have a problem of funds, so we are appealing for funding from well-wishers and relevant stakeholders so as to enable more children to attend the festival,” said Picardo.

Recently Chipawo Juniors attended a similar festival on June 18 to June 25 in Lingen, Germany where they performed a play called Chipo and the Bird, based on the history of Great Zimbabwe. Chipawo is an educational, non-profit-making trust that aims to benefit and empower Zimbabwean children through arts education.

Chipawo was founded in 1989 by Julie Frederikse, Robert McLaren, Stephen Chifunyise and Farai Gezi, with the objective of enriching the cultural exper¬ience of Zimbabwean children by introducing them to the culture and performing arts of Zimbabwe, the region and the continent. Chipawo at present administers a number of different projects, including those focused on arts education; early education; gender; child rights; HIV and Aids; poverty reduction; the deaf; the mentally and physically disabled; rural children; the girl child and orphans.
