Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s top officials have accused Zanu PF activists of trying to “pull the rug from under his feet” by working flat out to sabotage his recent tour of Lupane where he commissioned the Bubi-Lupane Dam.

It is alleged the Zanu PF members moved around the area on the eve of the tour indicating to the public that the event had been cancelled in an effort to force a poor turnout that could have embarrassed the MDC-T leader.

Tsvangirai‘s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka confirmed the development on the sidelines of a briefing at Matabeleland North Provincial governor Thokozile Mathuthu’s office.

“We have gathered that Zanu PF members were trying to sabotage this event. They were going around telling people that the event has been cancelled so that residents woould not attend. However, we are still to get the finer details of who exactly was doing that,” Tamborinyoka said.

Hundreds of villagers attended the event despite the reported attempts to interupt the event. Villagers who spoke to NewsDay on condition of anonymity also confirmed the allegations.

“Most people think that the function has been cancelled. Those whom you see here heard at the last minute that the function was on contrary to Zanu PF members’ lies,” said a villager at the event.

Mathuthu, who is also the Zanu PF Matabeleland North acting chairperson could however not be reached for comment.

She did not attend the PM’s function, but delegated provincial administrator Latiso Dlamini to read a speech on her behalf.

Tsvangirai on Friday commissioned the Bubi-Lupane Dam, which is expected to hold 40 million cubic metres of water to supply Lupane town, Matabeleland North capital.
