Matabeleland South MDC-T youth chairman Morgan Ncube, who was arrested two weeks ago accused of describing President Robert Mugabe as “a baboon”, has been released on bail.

Ncube was granted $50 bail and he was remanded to July 6 when he appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Misheck Cheda last week.

State allegations are that Ncube labelled Mugabe “a baboon” during his address at an MDC-T rally in Plumtree.

The matter took a new twist after Zanu PF officials from Matabeleland South province pulled out of the provincial Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (Jomic), saying they would only rejoin the group after the matter had been finalised in court.

Zanu PF provincial chairman Andrew Langa wrote to the Jomic national office in Harare advising them of the party’s pullout, saying they were treating the matter seriously.

The letter was copied to MDC and MDC-T Jomic co-chairpersons Petros Mukwena and Watchy Sibanda, respectively. In a statement yesterday, the MDC–T accused Zanu PF officials of trying to influence court decisions.

“MDC is disturbed by Zanu PF Matabeleland South province’s decision to disengage from Jomic activities citing frivolous reasons that they can only do so after the finalisation of Morgan Ncube, MDC Mat South youth assembly chairperson’s case for allegedly insulting Zanu PF’s Robert Mugabe,” the MDC-T said.

“The MDC is aware that the legal position is that when a matter has been brought before courts, it does not suspend any Jomic activities unless there is an indictment by the courts.”
