Zimbabwean athlete Marvin Bonde, who is based in the United States of America, missed out on an opportunity to represent the country in the 100m dash at the London Olympics next month.

The Olympics will run from July 27 to August 12. Bonde ran a wind-assisted 10,25secs in the 100m sprint early this month at the Clermont Meet falling short of the Olympic qualifying ‘B’ Standard which stands at 10,24secs .

The ‘A’ standard is pegged at 10,18secs. In April this year, Bonde ran a 10,45secs at the Orlando Meet and 21,21secs in the 200m sprint at Gainesville. Both competitions were in the USA.

This means that the athlete also failed to qualify for the 200m with the qualifying standard pegged at 20,55secs for the ‘A’ grouping and 20,65secs for ‘B’.

Another athlete based in the United States Zuva Bvekerwa ran 10,88 secs in the 100m dash while in the 200m he ran 21,77secs. One of the athletes who had qualified for the Olympics, Ngoni Makusha was ruled out due to a ruptured Achilles tendon during training early this year.

Makusha was one of the country’s medal hopefuls following his sterling performance, which saw him finish the 100m sprint in 9,89secs at the 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

He also qualified for the long jump with an 8,40m leap at the same competition.

Makusha was honoured for his performance last year winning the coveted Bowerman Trophy in the men’s category.

Athletes that could be taking part at the London Olympics include gold medallist and swimmer Kirsty Coventry, Cuthbert Nyasango, Wirimai Zhuwawo, Gilbert Mutandiro (all in marathon), Jamie Fraser Mackenzie and Micheen Thornycroft, both in the single sculls rowing.
