The name Reverend Lazarus Muyambi has always been synonymous with success. The man has been on the crest of a wave of success since the 1970s. Muyambi changed the face of Zimbabwe’s biggest cotton growing district by establishing a spiritual healing centre at Gokwe in 1972.

The centre was built to serve patients who suffer from mental illness and orphans. Quite a number of people including senior government officials and members of church denominations have been visiting him for spiritual healing, guidance and counselling.

The centre boasts a medical clinic, a primary school, teacher and orphan dormitories and a girls high school which is under construction.

He is the initiator and founder of St Agnes Preschool. The preschool has been in operation since 1983. Currently, it has an enrolment of 105 pupils; 59 boys and 46 girls.

Its catchment areas include Gokwe town, Gwehava, Chomumvuri, Miti, Rushwaya and Bova villages. Villages bordering the town centre have since been incorporated into Gokwe Urban.

More than 2 500 pupils have passed through the home. Most of them get early child development places at local primary schools easily because of its high quality standards.

Muyambi is founder and responsible authority of the Convent Of Chita cheZvipozvemoto (CZM) Primary School. The school was opened in January 1995.

Currently it has an enrolment of 660 pupils — 344 boys and 316 girls. CZM Primary School has been producing the best Grade 7 results in the district and Midlands province for the last few years.

The school has done well in co-curricular activities especially in music, drama and poetry.

It was the first primary school to offer computer education to pupils in Gokwe South.

The ever-ambitious Muyambi is planning to open a girls’ high school in 2013. Already a 1×2 classroom block, including an ablution block, have been constructed and another 1×2 classroom block is at roof level. The school is already registered with the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture.

Muyambi is also planning to construct another primary school at Mlalazi village under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe South. This primary school has already been registered with the Education ministry.

The site for the new school has already been surveyed and villagers have started gathering materials such as sand stones and clearing the place to kick-start construction.

Through Muyambi’s generosity, more than 50 students have benefited in the form of donations and others have been adopted through his efforts.

Most of them are now qualified professionals.

Time will tell how much more Muyambi will do for the Gokwe community.
