The trial of the seven MDC-T activists accused of assaulting fellow party members in Mutare is set to kick off on July 26.

The seven — who include Senator Keresencia Chabuka, Taurai Saradinyo, Doreen Nyaya, Godwin Sithole, Tsitsi Ziweya, Farai Aritura and Washington Mandebvu — are facing charges of assaulting councillors Pamela Mutare and Morgan Chipara at the party provincial offices early this month.

Prosecutor Nelson Makunyire told the court that on June 8 the suspects allegedly assaulted the two councillors following an altercation in their closed-door meeting.

It is alleged tempers flared after MDC-T Manicaland provincial chairperson Julius Magarangoma accused party councillors and MPs of underperforming.

In a fit of rage, Mutare and Chipara allegedly challenged Magarangoma saying he had no right to interfere with council business.

According to the State, this did not go down well with the provincial executive, leading to the pair’s alleged assault.

However, through their lawyer Passmore Nyakureba, the seven are alleging that the councillors dramatised the assault to settle political scores.
