CHINHOYI — A 24-year-old man who sired a child with his biological sister (14) following a series of sexual encounters was this week arraigned before a Chinhoyi magistrate facing rape charges.

The suspect (name withheld) was remanded in custody to July 10 when he appeared before magistrate Fanny Nyakudya on Tuesday.

The court heard that during the period extending from January 2009 to May 2011 at a farm near Chinhoyi, the suspect entered the hut in which the complainant was sleeping together with her twin sister.

The suspect allegedly sneaked into her blankets and raped her. The complainant, the court also heard, was startled after feeling pain and tried to push him away, but was overpowered.

The complainant reported the rape to her mother the following morning, but the mother threatened her saying the suspect would kill her if the matter was exposed, it was alleged.

The suspect allegedly took advantage of the girl’s fear and repeatedly raped her on different occasions and she eventually fell pregnant. The complainant’s mother is said to have discovered the pregnancy in May 2011.

Upon being quizzed by her mother over who was responsible for the pregnancy, the complainant, out of fear of victimisation, indicated she had been sexually abused by her boyfriend, Robert Charumana, who was then arrested by police.

The court heard Charumana was subsequently hauled to court for rape and was remanded in custody awaiting trial. The complainant, the prosecution averred, gave birth to a baby boy on November 10 last year.

But during Charumana’s trial last week, complainant stunned the court when she exonerated Charumana and instead implicated her brother.
