Two children who had lit newspapers to warm themselves yesterday burnt down the house in Bulawayo’s Mzilikazi high-density suburb after the fire went out of the control.

Property in the room at number R7 45517 was all destroyed.

When NewsDay arrived at the house, the fire brigade had just doused the fire. City chief fire officer Richard Peterson said the fire brigade received a call at 7:59am and took seven minutes to arrive, but found that “neighbours had already dealt with the fire”.

“It was found out that a pre-school-going boy had lit the fire and 25% of the property in the bedroom was affected, which is estimated at $1 000,” he said.

“The most important issue is that mothers or sisters must be careful that children don’t have access to paraffin and matches. These things must be kept out of reach.”

The children, whose parents live in South Africa, managed to escape the inferno unhurt.
