GWERU — Local Government Rural and Urban Development deputy minister Sesil Zvidzai has reportedly set his sights on becoming Gweru Urban MP.

Sources said Zvidzai, who is also a former Gweru mayor, was approached by four out of seven MDC-T wards in the constituency who want him to replace MP Rodrick Rutsvara. The source said Zvidzai had expressed his willingness to contest.

“They want him to replace Rutsvara whom they feel has been underperforming,” he said.

Rutsvara is accused of failing to utilise the Constituency Development Fund to uplift the city.

“People are saying he just bought a generator and a few desks for a local school. It is not clear what he did with the $50 000 allocated to the city,” the source said.

Contacted for comment, Zvidzai could neither deny not confirm his interest in the constituency.

“When people come to you and they say come back and be our executive mayor or our senator because of the immense contribution you would have made to the development of their area, what can you do?” he said.

But party insiders said the deputy minister’s interest in the constituency could be a manifestation of power struggles in the MDC-T provincial executive.

Repeated efforts to get a comment from Rutsvara were unsuccessful.
