SILOBELA — Some MPs used the $50 000 they received under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to marry more wives, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has said.

Speaking during a tour of CDF-financed projects at the weekend, Tsvangirai said MPs must be ready to account for the money when called upon to do so.

“Some are using this money to marry many wives, but we are saying this is not the purpose of CDF,” he said.

“MPs should be able to prove what they did with the money when they are asked to produce audit reports.”

The MDC-T leader paid tribute to Silobela MP Anadu Silulu who managed to drill nine boreholes in the constituency’s 14 wards.

“We have also bought cement for one clinic and Donsa irrigation project received 100 bags of cement, window panes and paint for schools in an attempt to develop our area,” Sululu said.

The MP appealed to the government to increase the CDF allocation saying the $50 000 was not enough.

“We kindly request you (Tsvangirai) and the ministers to increase the CDF funds to $500 000 to rural constituencies,” he said.

“With $500 000 we can all imagine what we could achieve within one or two to three years — massive development.”

A number of MPs were arrested this year by the Anti-Corruption Commission after they allegedly failed to account for their allocations.

Attorney-General Johannes Tomana halted prosecutions saying a comprehensive audit was necessary before the arrests were made.
