Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe will use next month’s African Union (AU) summit to engage African leaders on the plight of women, an official in her office said yesterday.

The summit will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from July 9 to 16.

Addelis Sibutha, a director in the DPM’s office said Khupe will table resolutions of the Global Power Africa Conference (GPAC) held in Harare last month.

“The outcomes of that summit will be tabled at the African Union Heads of States summit in Addis Ababa in July 2012, as well as during a side session during the 2012 International Aids conference in Washington, again in July,” she said.

Khupe is the chairperson of the Global Power Women Network Africa, a platform of elected or appointed women representatives.

The network seeks to advance the cause of women through empowerment initiatives.

“The women leaders in Harare acknowledged that Africa’s development continues to be impaired by sexual and reproductive health and rights challenges, including the scourge of HIV and Aids,” Sibutha said.

“They also agreed to recognise that gender inequality factors render women and girls more vulnerable to these conditions.”
