Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri yesterday hit out at political leaders who have publicly denigrated the police force as partisan, saying his charges would not be deterred by such criticism.

Chihuri also accused politicians of blaming the police for their weaknesses and mistakes.

Addressing guests at a send-off ceremony for a police contingent on a United Nations peace-keeping mission to three African countries, Chihuri described the critics as bent on demoralising the police.

“Politicians sometimes do not go empty for lack of apportioning blame and usually they will blame the police and say ‘(it is) police’ but we will (not) let them win or fall because eventually it is the people who will decide,” Chihuri said.

“We understand our work is defined by the law, we do not mind what critics may say because some of it is meant to damage the morale and undermine the integrity of the organization.”

The police officers will be doing duty in Liberia, South Sudan and Sierra Leone.

“We are genuine at heart, we try our level best and we put our all into it. We do not care if they talk, saying criticisms which are unfounded, allegations which do not hold water for we know what we stand for,” the police chief said.
