The Open Classic golf tournament which tees off at Chapman Golf Club on Friday had attracted a big field of 63 players including several from Zambia and South Africa.

This sees an increase from last year’s entry list of 46 players for the same event which is the fourth tournament on the Golden Pilsner Zambezi Tour circuit.

The prize fund has also increased from $10 000 to $15 000.

The competition, which is over 36 holes will start on Friday morning and will be completed the following day.

In an interview with NewsDay Sport yesterday, Tendayi Gwatiringa marketing and communications director of the Golden Pilsner Zambezi Tour, said all was set for the event.

“All preparations are on track and of late Chapman Golf Club has been a hive of activity as several professionals were seen on the practice range sharpening their game. At the close of registration, we had 63 players registered in the Open Classic; that is seven amateurs and 56 professionals.

“Of the 56 professionals, it is pleasing to report that three will be coming from Zambia, namely, Michael Chiluba, Patrick Mwendapole, who is a regular player on the Zambezi Tour and Obert Sholoma.

“Three players are coming from South Africa: Alpheus Kelaphile, Thanda Mavhundla who finished tied 17th at the Marange Open last month and Mark Williams,” said Gwatiringa.

The Open Classic will also witness the return of one of the country’s leading amateur golfers, Scott Vincent to his home course at Chapman.

Vincent, who is based in the USA at Virginia Tech University, will be taking part in his second local tournament in as many weeks after finishing second in last weekend’s Manicaland Amateur Golf Championships at Hillside Golf Club.
