Masvingo Central MP Jeffreyson Chitando (MDC-T) has been ordered to pay an interim $150 monthly maintenance for the upkeep of the seven-month-old baby he allegedly sired with a Mucheke woman, Loice Vurayayi.

Initially, Vurayayi, whose age was not disclosed in court papers, had demanded $350 per month from Chitando while the MP offered $60.

Magistrate Lin Manyika granted the MP his wish to undergo a paternity test to determine if he was the child’s biological father.

In her ruling last Friday, the magistrate said the interim payment comes into effect starting on July 30. She also ordered the two parties to undergo paternity tests in the next three months, with Chitando footing the bill.

In her application for maintenance, Vurayayi claimed Chitando had refused to cover her hospital maternity bills when she delivered, and did not buy any clothes for the baby.
