Zimbabwe, which hosts more than 5 000 refugees, yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Refugee Day.

June 20 was set aside by the United Nations for the world to reflect on the plight of refugees worldwide.

Zimbabwe is home to refugees mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Sudan.

The international theme for this year’s commemorative events is “Dilemma” and the UN’s office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Zimbabwe has narrowed the dilemmas faced by refugees and other displaced people to two aspects: how to restore hope and ensure that refugee children have access to universal primary education.

According to a UNHCR press statement released yesterday, the theme speaks to the urgent need to address the increase in forced displacement across borders.
