Zora music proponent, Leonard Karikoga Zhakata, will entertain guests at the official launch dinner of the Zimbabwe Rural Schools Library Trust (ZRSLT) Harare Province campaign, to be hosted by Meikles Hotel next month.

Zhakata, who is a goodwill ambassador with the trust, has always supported charity causes and has helped in a number of projects, including the Glen View-based Isheanesu Children’s Home, for which he has hosted several fund raising shows.

The prolific musician has a passion for helping the underprivileged as expressed on the song Spread the Message off his 2004 album, where he pledges to perform his social responsibility duty.

The musician said he would perform special projects for the underprivileged through his shows and called upon music fans to support this cause.

Tonight Zhakata will perform at Holly’s Hotel and his spokesperson said such mid-week shows would be a platform for social responsibility programmes before he goes fully commercial at weekend gigs.

“Zhakata has always had a heart for the underprivileged and his involvement in the rural schools library project is testimony to this passion,” said a spokesperson.

“We are hoping that through mid-week shows like the one at Holly’s Hotel on Thursday (tonight) we will be able to interact with well-wishers that also want to assist in our social responsibility projects. We hope the ZRSLT will go a long way in reaching out to rural schools.”

Officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe last month, ZRSLT aims to establish sustainable rural school libraries in Zimbabwe, starting off with one library in every rural district of Zimbabwe. The initiative is prompted by the fact that most rural school schools in Zimbabwe do not have libraries.

It is also an attempt to comply with an international school library manifesto jointly development by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, which require that every school should have a library.

While it is government responsibility to provide school library services, it appears it will be a while before the government can provide for such services largely due to resource constraints.

The Harare Province launch of the ZRSLT is the first of such launches which will soon be rolled out to other provincial capitals.

The trust is calling on Harare residents to support the initiative.
