SANYATI — A 39-year-old Marondera man was electrocuted last Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to cut live cables using a bolt cutter.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, but withheld the man’s identity as his next of kin were yet to be advised.

Police said on June 13 and at around 8pm, the deceased, of Dombotombo suburb in Marondera, went to Muteyiwa village under Chief Hozheri in Sanyati.

He reportedly climbed up a power transmission pole with the intention to vandalise the cables and got electrocuted.

Mabgweazara said a villager, Trish Sikwili (26), heard an explosion while she was sleeping in her house and went outside to investigate.

From a distance, Sikwili saw the powerline on fire and went back to sleep until the next morning.

“In the morning, the informant discovered the body of the deceased hanging from the powerline,” said Mabgweazara, adding the matter was reported to ZRP Sanyati who attended the scene and recovered a bolt cutter, a pair of pliers and a knife. Also found at the scene were the deceased’s identity particulars.

The body was taken to Sanyati Baptist Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

“People should avoid attempts to steal power cables as this is dangerous and also a serious offence,” he said.
