The wife of a senior police officer in Kwekwe escaped jail after being found guilty of negligent driving and culpable homicide for killing two pedestrians and seriously injuring another.

Finia Goko (34), married to Sergeant Major Goko, was convicted of driving a Nissan Bassara without a licence on April 20 when the accident happened.

Instead of applying brakes as she was approaching an intersection, Finia accelerated, losing control of the car before hitting three pedestrians Steven Matika (70), Ratidzo Tafirenyika (22) and her one-year-old daughter Gamuchirai Magoro who were walking on a nearby pavement.

The car went on to ram into the citys oldest building, Kwekwe Theatre, drilling a huge hole into it before stopping.

Matika and Magoro died on admission at Kwekwe General Hospital while Tafirenyika escaped with serious injuries.

Appearing before provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere, Finia pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and negligent driving causing the death and injury of the three.

She was then sentenced to a fine of $200 for driving without a licence and six months in prison for negligent driving.

Of the six months, three were suspended on condition she paid $500 for negligent driving by June 29 and the other three were further suspended for five years on condition during that period she does not commit a similar offence.

The court also banned the police officers wife from driving for the next six months.

Only recently another unlicensed driver who ran over Kwekwe journalist Howard Masaniga resulting in him losing his leg was sentenced by the same court to two months in prison without the option of a fine.
