The 10-day population census to be conducted in August is set to gobble more than $16 million, a senior official said yesterday.

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency director general Mutasa Dzinotizei said the exercise was vital for government’s planning purposes.

“In order to successfully plan for, and implement economic and social development policies, administrative programmes or scientific research, it is necessary to have reliable and detailed data of the size, composition, distribution and other benchmark statistics on the population,” he said in a statement.

“The census provides this much-needed information.”

Dzinotizei said the census was scheduled for August 18 to 28.

Zimbabwe has been conducting a census every 10 years since 1982. The last count put the country’s total population at over 12 million but the figure was heavily contested.
