MASVINGO — A Chivi man was fatally struck with an axe handle by his colleague last weekend after refusing to buy beer when it was his turn to do so.

40-year-old Chamunorwa Munashe of Mudadisi village in Madyangove, Chivi, allegedly killed his friend, Tiritose Shandu (36).

The two had spent the day drinking together before an argument arose over whose turn it was to buy beer.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake yesterday confirmed the incident.

He said police had since arrested Munashe over the alleged murder and investigations were still in progress.

“We have since arrested the suspect while we have launched investigations into the matter.

“The bone of contention hinged on who was next to buy beer, which led to Munashe allegedly hitting his friend with an axe handle,” Matake said.

“After the misunderstanding, Shandu left the drinking spot and went home where he had his supper.

Munashe then followed Shandu where the latter tried to dismiss the former, but Munashe grabbed an axe handle and struck the now deceased once in the head and disappeared into the darkness.”

He said Munashe is expected to appear in court soon.
