RUSTENBURG — It’s official — Pitso Mosimane will not be holding the reins when South Africa take on Botswana on Saturday in their next World Cup 2014 qualifier, but he might walk away with R24 million.

Safa confirmed yesterday morning that the Bafana Bafana coach had left the national team. Steve Komphela takes charge of the games against Botswana and Gabon.

Safa CEO Robin Petersen said: “Drawing in last 15 minutes of the game (against Ethiopia) made us realise we had to act now.”

Petersen denied they had spoken to Gordon Igesund. “There’s no truth in that.”

The Safa management committee (formerly the emergency committee) wrestled well into Monday night over a reported R24m contract poser over how to wriggle out of their relationship with Mosimane.

The meeting at Safa House which started around 9am appeared to have reached a decision to part ways with Mosimane, but with two years still remaining on his R1m a month contract, the Safa hierarchy spent the whole day and night looking for a way out of the contract that has a R24m balance on its tenure.

It also emerged during the course of the day that assistant coach Steve Komphela led the running as the favoured candidate for coach and was eventually put in charge of Saturday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier in Botswana and the friendly game against Gabon next week Friday.

But the Komphela idea seems to have its problems, since he is contracted to Free State Stars as head coach.

The committee was chaired by Safa president Kirsten Nematandani and comprised vice-presidents Irvin Khoza, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, Danny Jordaan, CEO Robin Peterson and Dennis Mumble, the chief operations officer.
