A Harare traffic police officer escaped death by a whisker on Wednesday last week after a commuter omnibus driver hit and fractured her leg in an attempt to evade a roadblock.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Angwa Street and South Avenue where police were carrying out a traffic blitz on unscrupulous motorists.

Gerald Mhlanga (27) was yesterday not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Anita Tshuma facing a charge of attempted murder and was remanded in custody to June 15 after prosecutor Elaine Mokora opposed bail.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Allegations against Mhlanga are that on the day in question, he was driving a Toyota Hiace along Angwa Street in the city centre when he came across police manning a roadblock.

After being waved to stop, Mhlanga initially appeared to have complied and brought his vehicle to a near halt, but suddenly took off at high speed driving towards officer Moleen Chingwaru.

Chingwaru jumped off the road but Mhlanga allegedly hit her on the right leg and fractured her foot in the process.

Mhlanga was pursued by other police officers who were close by and was eventually arrested.
