Some Members of Parliament who were named among those that have never uttered a word in the five years they have sat in the House to represent their constituencies claim they have actually said something, even if it were only once.

MPs who have maintained the “golden silence” in Parliament were exposed in the Saturday edition of NewsDay as having contributed nothing since their election in 2008.

Although the Parliament index of speeches records them as not having said anything since they were elected, some of the MPs have approached NewsDay and, armed with copies of Hansard, the official record of Parliamentary debates, sought to prove they had indeed said something in Parliament.

The aggrieved MPs include Gutu North MP, Edmore Maramwidze (MDC-T) (claims he spoke five times), Pelandaba Mpopoma MP, Samuel Khumalo (MDC-T) (three times), Chikomba East MP, Edgar Mbwembwe (Zanu PF) (claims he moved a motion on the Presidential speech and spoke three times).

Co-Minister of Home Affairs, Kembo Mohadi (Zanu PF) who was also cited as one of those MPs who have said nothing actually spoke at least once while answering a question on spot fines.
