South Africa-based long-distance runner Lyno Muchena overcame a galaxy of stars to clinch the first edition of Manicaland Diamond 42km Marathon race in Mutare at the weekend.

Muchena, who came into the race as an outsider, hit the ribbon first in 2hr 21min 86secs ahead of second-placed Millen Mutende, who recorded a time of 2hr 22min 23secs.

Muchena received $500. Another hopeful Charles Soza came third in 2hr 22min 37secs while Harare-based Brighton Chipere came close on fourth position in 2hr 23min 29secs.

Muchena said at the end of the race: I am delighted to win the accolade. lt was a tough race and I managed to beat a couple of stars. The victory will build my confidence as I am preparing to go to South Africa where I specialise in marathons and ultra runs.
