The event’s profile and popularity is fast growing as it attracted participation from a wide cross-section of the community.

Professional athlete and member of Zimbabwe’s Olympic marathon team, who also recently took fourth position in the China Marathon, Gilbert Mutandiro, won the My Harare Fun Run and Walk, a fundraising event that was hosted by the Harare Mayor’s Cheer Fund on Africa Day at Exhibition Park.

Mutandiro was the first runner to cross the finish line in a time of 34 minutes and 58 seconds in the men’s category of the 10km race, followed by Andrew Chimbidzika and Martin Mbofana.

Winner of the women’s category in the tightly contested race was Muchaneta Gwata who came home in a time of 36 minutes and 54 seconds; followed by Chiedza Chikore and Lizzie Chikore in second and third positions respectively. Dorcas Hwatira took top prize in the wheelchair category with a time of 47 minutes and 50 seconds.

The corporate sector put up a commendable effort in contributing to this worthwhile cause.

Event sponsors included Mahindra, which is set to launch a new and exciting SUV in the next few weeks, Nyaradzo Group, POSB, Spar Head Office, Schweppes, Mashwede Holdings and Century Water.

Ethiopian Airlines donated a raffle prize of an air ticket to London while MARS and Rock Foundation provided ambulances and emergency medical services at the event.

Over 200 sporting enthusiasts who included the Mayor of the City of Harare Muchadeyi Masunda, members of the sporting fraternity, the corporate sector, and the diplomatic community, families as well as schoolchildren took part in the 10km race and the 5km walking categories of the well organised event.

Overall, the event provided a great opportunity for Harare residents and sporting enthusiasts from all walks of life to connect, network and develop pride in their city in a fun-filled sporting environment.
