Police on Tuesday detained three officials from the Bulawayo-based National Youth Development Trust (NYDT) for four hours for yet unknown reasons.

NYDT yesterday said senior programmes officer Bhekumusa Moyo, assistant information officer Prosper Ndlovu and logistics officer Meluleki Dube were arrested as they conducted youth-related work in the area.

“Police have arrested three NYDT officers in Lupane. The charges against them are not yet clear,” reads part of the statement.

“The three were arrested while conducting consultative meetings with various councillors in Lupane to share notes on youth programmes that the organisation intends to implement in the district.”

The three were represented by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the lawyers were still trying to establish reasons for the arrest. They were reportedly picked up at Lupane Women’s Centre and detained from 10am to 2pm.

But Matabeleland North police spokesperson Siphiwe Makonese said they were not aware of the arrests.
