A 44-year-old man from Emakhandeni in Bulawayo who allegedly lured a woman to a secluded place and stole her $2 290 was on Monday brought to court for fraud.

Amos Mutasa was not asked to plead to fraud charges when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa for bail application.

He was granted $100 bail and ordered to reside at his given address, report at Magwegwe Police Station on Mondays and Fridays, and not to interfere with potential witnesses.

The court heard that on May 20 at 10am, the complainant, Mwela Sikhakhama of Nketa 7 in Bulawayo, went to the bank in the company of her mother where they withdrew $2 290.

While walking in the street, Mutasa dropped a bundle of money on the pavement without the two women noticing.

He picked up the cash and asked the women to come with him so they could share the money at Centenary Park.

But before they could do so, they were approached by an unidentified man, who is still at large, who claimed to be a policeman who told the three they were under arrest.

Sikhakhama was ordered to surrender all she had and she showed the bogus police officer the $2 290.

Mutasa allegedly took the bag and stole all the cash unnoticed and returned it to Sikhakhama.

He then ordered his alleged victims to leave the place while the fake policeman allegedly pretended to have arrested Mutasa. He told Sikhakhama and her mother that he was taking Mutasa to the police station.

Sikhakhama discovered that her money had been stolen when the two had disappeared and she reported the matter to the police.

On May 26, Sikhakhama met Mutasa in the city centre and tipped off the police, leading to his arrest. Nothing was recovered.
