A 36-year-old Highfield man has been slapped with a nine-year jail term after being convicted of attempting to kill his mother by striking her several times with a hoe, fracturing her head, arm and breaking three ribs.

Shingirai Bukutu vented his anger on his mother, Catherine Bukutu (62), accusing her of sending him on an errand where he was bitten by a dog.

He pleaded guilty to the offence yesterday when he appeared before regional magistrate Estere Chivasa charged with attempted murder.

Bukutu will, however, serve an effective seven-year jail term after two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The incident occurred on September 10 last year. Bukutus mother is reportedly still undergoing physiotherapy. Prosecutor Sarah Bosha said on the day in question and at around 8pm, Bukutu was sent by his mother to deliver maize bran to another house in the neighbourhood.

The court heard Bukutu returned and confronted his mother in the house claiming he had been bitten by a dog at the house she had sent him.

When his mother asked him to show her the wound, he became violent and pushed her away before picking up a hoe from outside the house.

The court heard Bukutu bludgeoned his mother all over her body and only stopped when the hoes handle broke.
