The Benjani Mwaruwari Under-16 Youth Soccer Festival, featuring eight teams drawn from Bulawayo, roars into life at White City Stadium tomorrow morning.

Highlanders, Rising Stars, Emakhandeni Pirates, FMH football club and Rising Stars are in Group A while Bantu Rovers, Ajax Hotspurs, Magwegwe Secondary School are in Group B and have been joined by Chicken Inn who have replaced Magwegwe Young Stars.

Winners of the competition will get the chance to watch the high-profile Benjani Mwaruwari testimonial match on May 26 in Harare which is expected to feature top players from around the world.

Organising secretary Faith Dube yesterday told NewsDay Sport all the participating teams are ready for the competition.

“Everything is now in place as we have made necessary arrangements to make sure that the tournament goes on well.

“The junior league has been suspended to pave way for the tournament.

“We have replaced Magwegwe Young Stars with Chicken Inn because most of the children there are from Magwegwe Secondary,” he said.

The semi-finals and final have been slotted for Sunday while the winners will collect a floating trophy, tracksuits, medals and a football kit. Runners-up are expected to get a football kit and medals.

“We decided against awarding prize monies because we thought that affording the children the chance to watch the testimonial match will be a bigger incentive.

“It will motivate the youngsters. We will take 23 players from the winning team and seven players from the losing sides who will get individual awards to make it 30 players,” he said.

The competition, which will now be held annually, was launched by the former Warriors skipper at Magwegwe Secondary School a fortnight ago.
