Illegal buildings in the central business district face demolition after Harare City Council sought the intervention of government in an effort to curb the sprouting of unlawful structures without approval.

One of the buildings reportedly facing demolition is at the corner of Jason Moyo Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street near Noczim House, while two other structures are at the corner of Mbuya Nehanda Street and Kwame Nkrumah Avenue.

However, council could not immediately ascertain whether these buildings were registered or not. Council has asked Local Government minister Ignatius Chomboto intervene.

Chairperson of the housing and community services committee Charles Nyatsuro said: The one at the corner of Jason Moyo and Leopold Takawira next to Noczim, that building is illegal.

Its not supposed to be there, if they dont comply we will force that to be demolished. I am not aware of some of the buildings, but I know for a fact that most of them are illegal and they have to be demolished.

On several council properties invaded by a shadowy Zanu PF-aligned Mbare-based militia group, Chipangano, Nyatsuro said council had alerted Chombo to discuss the matter with Home Affairs co-ministers Theresa Makone and Kembo Mohadi to address the issue.

On Carter House (in Mbare) there is nothing yet. We are supposed to meet the three ministers so that we discuss the issue and come up with a lasting solution, he said.
