KARIBA Three suspected poachers were last week arrested after they were found in possession of two elephant tusks worth over $7 000.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrest of the trio who tried to flee from the police leading to the recovery of tusks weighing 28,460kg.
The accused, all from Harare, were identified as Jonason Paul Mukwasi Murapa (47) of Durnat Close, Mt Pleasant, Conscious Matienga (40) of 9320 Kuwadzana 3 and Taylor Kurehwatira (62) of 32 Air Zimbabwe Complex, Airport.
Mabgweazara said on May 9 at around midnight, a team of police officers were carrying out a stop-and-search patrol in the Chawara area in Kariba when they spotted a blue Nissan Hardbody twincab, registration number AAH 9047.
The driver immediately tried to make a U-turn, but the rear wheels got stuck after the car plunged into a ditch.
The three occupants tried to flee from the scene prompting police to fire warning shots into the air and they stopped. They were arrested and the vehicle was searched, leading to the recovery of two elephant tusks, said Mabgweazara.
Mabgweazara said police were on high alert over issues of poaching and urged the public not to take chances.
