TUNIS — Defending champions Espérance put in a superb display of attacking football to take a decisive advantage in their 2012 Caf Champions League second round, first leg, tie against Zimbabwe’s Dynamos this weekend.

The Tunisian side won 6-0 to make the away leg in a fortnight’s time a mere formality. There were two goals for Youssef Msakni, and further strikes from Iheb Msakni, Yannick N’Djeng, Karim Aouadhi and Walid Hichri.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly lost 1-0 at Stade Malien thanks to a 90th minute goal from Lamine Diawara. The Red Devils will be confident of overturning the deficit at home, having wasted a number of scoring opportunities in Mali.

Ahly’s Cairo rivals Zamalek fared better though, winning 2-0 at Morocco’s Maghreb de Fès, thanks to a pair of late headers from Ahmed Hassan and Ahmed Gaafar.

Al-Hilal of Sudan were held to a 1-1 draw by Algerian team ASO Chlef in the surprise of the weekend and they will have it all to do in the away leg.

TP Mazembe of the DR Congo, winners of the competition in 2009 and 2010, hold a comfortable 2-0 lead from their home leg against another Sudanese squad, Al-Merreikh. Although the job is not complete, they will be delighted not to have conceded an away goal.

Ghana’s Berekum Chelsea and CotonSport from Cameroon played to a 0-0 draw with the latter now favourites in the return leg in Garoua.

Nigeria’s Sunshine Stars played to a 1-1 draw against Mali’s Djoliba, a result that will favour them. And finally, Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel have one foot in the group stages after a 4-1 success at home to Ivory Coast’s AFAD Djékanou.

The return fixtures will be played the weekend of May 11-13.
