The annual Cottco schools rugby festival explodes into life at Prince Edward School with a total of 37 matches lined up across three venues today.

As has become the norm in the festival’s 14-year history, the non-traditional rugby playing schools will be in action today, Wednesday and Friday while the more competitive rugby playing schools play tomorrow, Thursday and Saturday.

Today action will take place across three venues, with the schools’ senior teams in action at the famous Jubilee Field, Avenue Field and Chapel Field while the Under-16 teams will play at the Rhodes Field.

In some potentially exciting matches at the Jubilee Field, Ellis Robins take on Mutare Boys’ High while Vainona tackles Chinhoyi High School.

Prince Edward and St George’s’ second-string sides will also be in action today when they lock horns with Kyle College and Hillcrest College’s second teams respectively at the Jubilee Field.

In some of the matches at the Avenues Field George Stark from Mbare take on Chipadze High School from Bindura while Dzivarasekwa take on Mbare High.

Two girls’ teams will be in action today at the Jubilee Field at midday, with Girls’ High taking on George Stark while Roosevelt take on Eaglesvale girls’ team.

The event has grown into the biggest activity on the schools’ sporting calendar and the number of participating teams increases every year.

A record 174 teams are expected to take part in the week-long event which has also attracted 12 girls’ teams and four regional teams from neighbours South Africa and Botswana.

The festival is aimed at promoting rugby in Zimbabwe by encouraging schools to play rugby and creating a wider base for participation at national level, which is why there is no ultimate winner in the end.

l Meanwhile in the Lion Lager National Rugby League, log leaders Harare Sports Club maintained their unbeaten run with a 47-25 victory over Matabeleland Warriors in a top-of-the-table clash at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

It was Harare Sports Club’s sixth victory on the trot while for the Bulawayo-based side it was their first defeat of the season.
