Two factions fighting for the control of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) have organised separate events to mark this year’s Workers’ Day on Tuesday.

ZCTU, which is the country’s largest umbrella labour body, split into two factions following a disputed elective congress held last year.

The two factions are led by Lovemore Matombo and George Nkiwane respectively.

Secretary-general of the Matombo-led ZCTU faction, Raymond Majongwe, yesterday said their main commemorations would be held at the Harare Gardens.

The Nkiwane faction will have theirs at Gwanzura Stadium.

Majongwe said their celebrations will run under the theme: “Workers Unite, Restore Your Dignity and Fight for Poverty Datum Line Salaries”.

Japhet Moyo, secretary-general of the Nkiwane faction, said they expected Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Labour and Social Services minister Paurina Mpariwa to be guest speakers at their function.

He said their theme would be, “By Words and Deeds We are Proud to be ZCTU”.

But Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said his boss had not yet confirmed the invitation.
