A police sergeant based at Manicaland police headquarters in Mutare yesterday appeared in court for allegedly converting $4 751 in police fines to his own use.

Diamon Makaza (30) was not asked to plead to the fraud charges when he appeared before Mutare magistrate Aniah Ndiraya. He was remanded to May 2 on $1 000 bail.

The State alleges sometime between February last year and March 5 this year Makaza, who was stationed at Manicaland ZRP provincial headquarters finance section, received a total of $5 406 from different police stations around the province.

The court heard that after receiving the money, Makaza was expected to receipt it.

Instead, Makaza allegedly pocketed $4 751 of the money received and receipted only $655. The matter only came to light following an internal police audit.

The State submitted that Makaza personally wrote the receipts for the ZRP Manicaland Finance section entering different figures on top of the fast copies with his force number and rank before understating the amount received.

As part of his bail conditions, Makaza was ordered to report to police twice a day and surrender his passport to the clerk of court at Mutare Magistrates Court. Walter Saunyama prosecuted.
