The University of Zimbabwe (UZ)’s Theatre Honours final-year students will on Sunday host a Theatre Achievement Awards ceremony at the UZ Beit Hall.

The ceremony is an acknowledgement by current students the university has groomed many artists now recognised as pioneers in the theatre, media and film industries.

“The night will be graced by the pioneers of the theatre department of the UZ who have continued to support and contribute to the theatre industry in Zimbabwe,” said the Theatre Achievement Awards marketing and publicity officer Lyneth Mtemeri.

Expected to attend the ceremony are stakeholders in the theatre, media and film industries, who have partnered or worked with the department over the years.

The ceremony will see 13 winners walk away with awards from various categories including the best actress and actor from, the UZ, as well as various internal awards, including the best dancer, best actress and best student director, among others.

“The 13 awards will acknowledge students, who are now prominent in the industry, students with great potential who are still at the university and individuals who have made it possible for the theatre department to grow.

“The ceremony will also aknowledge the dedication of lecturers and their long service to the department,” added Mtemeri.

The nominees will include the following: Outstanding Male from the UZ — Tenford Chitana, Mike Madhodha and Peace Makwara.

Outstanding Female from the UZ — Ruth Makumbirofa, Rutendo Chigudu and Linia Ruziva.

Best Student Actor — Patrick Miller, Enock (Part Three) and Tawanda Chireka.

Best Student Actress — Kudzi Chisirimunhu, Diana Maphosa and Chiedza Chinhanhu.

Best Male Student Dancer — Tatenda (Part One), Gwinyai Nyamunda and Innocent Ncube.

Best Female Student Dancer — Delilah Mzondo, Aletta Part One and Aureen Part One.

All-Time Sponsor Award — Student Solidarity Trust, Culture Fund and Delta Corporation.

All-Time Partner Award — Chipawo Trust, Savannah Trust and Rooftop Promotions.

Best Supporting Lecturer — T Gwekwerere (African Languages), M Chirere (English Department) and Chiparaushe (DRC).

Best Supporting Female Student — Tryagain Chikandaviya, Getrude Zombe and Mazvita Mauchaza.

Best Supporting Male Student — Hilary Mavengano and Chido Kavhumbura.

Theatre Arts Pioneer Achievement Award — Robert Mshengu and Dr V Chivaura.
